Everyone should be an entrepreneur

This is not an article promoting entrepreneurship because it aids economic growth, helps alleviate poverty and all the textbook stuff we’ve been taught over the years. Rather, it is about an aspect we rarely think about – emotional growth.

Life, in a sense, is much like entrepreneurship which involves managing an important project with considerable initiative and risk. To start a family is to be an entrepreneur. To identify a need, and fill it, is to be an entrepreneur. To be a courageous leader, is to be an entrepreneur.

Everyone craves that feeling of fulfillment and inner satisfaction. Creating something new brings a special kind of joy and warmth with it. Nurturing it and seeing it grow makes you exude happiness, much like a mother watching her baby grow. Or a florist watching the first buds of a daisy plant open up to sunlight.

Entrepreneurship builds your emotional stamina. For every time you fail and start again, you gain an ounce of courage, you learn new lessons, and most importantly, you learn how to get back on your feet with the speed of light. When you are attacked, just like white blood cells, you develop immunity and conquer your enemies.

Life without passion is boring. And this is what entrepreneurship does – incite passion. Or maybe it’s the other way round. What would life be without passion, without a drive to do more, achieve more and break boundaries, even with limited resources?

Professor Howard Stevenson, the godfather of entrepreneurship studies at Harvard Business School got it right when he defined entrepreneurship as  ‘the pursuit of opportunity beyond resources controlled’. So, do you want to set up a megastore? Then develop an entrepreneurial mindset. Do you want to build a house while earning minimum wage? Then develop an entrepreneurial mindset. Do you plan to get married, then you need to think like an entrepreneur!

Start something today! Find inner satisfaction, build your emotional stamina and add passion to your life. Plant a garden, start a business, marry your sweetheart, find the cure for a disease, adopt a child…There are so many ways to be an entrepreneur. It is not all about business and profit. It is much about finding a tonic for your mind.
